Low self-esteem can make it difficult to pursue career goals, make friends or have long lasting relationships. Here are some suggestions to help you rebuild your self-esteem:

Undergo Self Esteem Counselling

Self-esteem counselling is perhaps one of the most important steps you can take to improve your self-esteem. In counselling you will be given the opportunity to explore a variety of factors that gave rise to a poor self-esteem and identify ways to overcome your issues.

Many people have a sense of their lack of confidence or that they do not hold themselves in high regard, yet they do not understand its origin. Through counselling you will be able to look your life experiences, like accumulated criticisms, and problematic beliefs that have that have led to your negative self-evaluations, which would in turn allow you to heal from the past wounds and develop healthier ways of living your life.

Improve Your Self-Image

When asked, “what do you believe people think about you?” many people with a low self-esteem do not like their body language or the way they carry themselves; they are dissatisfied with their own appearance or their verbal communication and they internalize the judgements of others. You probably know what aspects of your self-image you dislike, and can work towards making improvements. Changing your self-image does not necessarily require a full makeover, but can be done in small ways such as, for example, taking extra time for personal care. By taking better care of your appearance you may begin to feel better about yourself and learn how to deal with those aspects of your appearance that cannot be changed.

Learn Something New

Sometimes it just takes a little encouragement to start to feel better about yourself. One way to do this is to learn something new. Taking a course in something you love such as cooking, art or music will allow you to find a way to differently connect to yourself. You may also deepen your understanding of the world around you, find joy in the process of discovery, or get inspired and more inspiring to those around you.

Set Goals

You may remember learning goal setting in school; however, it is not just for school or work, but also for everyday life. When setting goals it is imperative to make them S.M.A.R.T. – small, manageable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Start by making your goals small, such as taking some extra time for yourself everyday by going on a walk. Once your goals have been achieved you will get a sense of accomplishment and feel better about yourself.
Improving your self-esteem allows you to find a way to live life with confidence, content and freedom. Counselling is a great place to start.
