"Doing Good"

To be doing good deeds is man’s most glorious task.

– Sophocles

If you’re feeling an altruistic desire to do some good, know that it’s much easier to accomplish than you may think. Doing good – whether it’s towards yourself, others, your community, or to the rest of the world around you, is a great way to reap some rewards: it feels good to do good, and it encourages others to treat you well in turn. We all have the power to make a difference, and, with our increasingly interconnected world, what goes around comes around – as the saying goes.

Learn how to maximize your impact on the world and the community around you with these simple ideas.

Ask “How Can I Help This Person?”

When you meet someone, whether it’s a friend or stranger, ask yourself how you can offer some casual helpfulness to her or him.  This doesn’t have to be anything exceptional or elaborate. It can be as simple as buying a coffee for your friend, holding the door open for a stranger, or shoveling the snow from your neighbour’s pathway. Doing good really means helping whenever you can by doing whatever you can, and often, that just means helping through small, everyday ways such as these. They may seem inconsequential, but they may make a difference in someone’s day.

Show Kindness

With our increasingly demanding world, it’s not hard to notice the levels of stress that many people are under these days. And, even if you think someone you just met is the happiest person in the world, you never really know what a person might actually be going through. So, offering any form of kindness can really go a long way. Throughout the day, when you’re at work, school, or out and about, deliberately bring more kindness to yourself and others. Be polite, ask about someone’s day (and give them your full attention when speaking), or invite your co-worker out to lunch so they don’t have to eat alone. You can imagine the good feelings that will come from treating others with kindness

Doing good is what the world really needs right now, and it’s a powerful way to help others while making your life feel more meaningful. So don’t be afraid to spread your altruistic wings by lending someone a helping hand, volunteering or simply being kinder to others around you.

Volunteer In Your Local Community

If you’re interested in helping out in your local community, or even in a certain field like environmental studies, volunteering with an organization is the best way to get started. With everything available online, you can research and find numerous organizations that are eagerly looking for people just like you to lend a helping hand. This is also a great way to learn new skills, socialize, and meet new friends, not to mention help you get out of your comfort zone.
